MPG and L/100km run in opposite directions

Miles per gallon is distance per fuel — higher is better. Litres per 100 km is fuel per distance — lower is better. Because they are reciprocals, MPG is deceptive when comparing improvements. Going from 15 to 20 MPG saves far more fuel over the same distance than going from 40 to 50 MPG, even though the second looks like the bigger jump. L/100km makes the saving obvious.

The sticker figure is optimistic

Official ratings come from standardised test cycles. Real-world consumption is typically 10–20% worse, and considerably worse in city traffic, cold weather, with a roof box, or at sustained high speed. Aerodynamic drag rises with the square of velocity, so cruising at 130 km/h instead of 110 can cost 20% more fuel.

For an accurate figure, fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive normally for a few hundred kilometres, then refill and divide.

Fuel is not the whole cost of driving

Depreciation, tyres, servicing and insurance typically add as much again per kilometre. National mileage reimbursement rates exist precisely because fuel alone understates the cost of using a vehicle. For a trip-sharing calculation among friends, fuel-only is the normal convention and is what this calculates.

How do I convert MPG to L/100km?
Divide 235.215 by the MPG figure when using US gallons. 30 MPG is 235.215 / 30 = 7.84 L/100km. For UK imperial gallons the constant is 282.481, which is why UK and US MPG figures are not comparable.
What is a good fuel economy figure?
For a modern petrol car, 30–40 MPG (6–8 L/100km) is typical. Hybrids reach 45–60 MPG (4–5 L/100km). Large SUVs and pickups often sit at 18–24 MPG (10–13 L/100km). Driving style moves any of these by 15% or more.
Does driving slower really save fuel?
Up to a point. Efficiency usually peaks somewhere around 80–90 km/h. Below that, engine losses dominate; above it, aerodynamic drag rises with the square of speed. Dropping from 130 to 110 km/h commonly saves 15–20%.
How should a group split fuel costs fairly?
The usual convention is to divide the total fuel cost by everyone in the car, including the driver — the driver is also contributing the vehicle, its wear and the driving. Some groups exclude the driver from the split for that reason. Both are defensible; agree before you set off.
