The Critical Mathematics of Margin vs. Markup
In commercial accounting, Gross Margin and Markup describe the relationship between product cost and selling price, but they use completely different denominators:
\[\text{Gross Margin} = \frac{\text{Revenue} - \text{COGS}}{\text{Revenue}} \times 100\% = \frac{\text{Profit}}{\text{Revenue}} \times 100\%\]
\[\text{Markup} = \frac{\text{Revenue} - \text{COGS}}{\text{COGS}} \times 100\% = \frac{\text{Profit}}{\text{COGS}} \times 100\%\]
