The Mathematics of Retail Discounts & Sales Taxes

Retail sales taxes and percentage discounts are among the most frequent calculations encountered in daily commerce. Yet, marketing gimmicks often deceive shoppers regarding how coupons stack.

Why 20% + 20% Does Not Equal 40% Off

When a store offers "20% off sale, plus take an extra 20% off with your store card," the discounts are compounded sequentially:

\[\text{Final Price} = P \times (1 - d_1) \times (1 - d_2)\]

For a $100 item: $100 \times (1 - 0.20) \times (1 - 0.20) = \$100 \times 0.80 \times 0.80 = \$64.00 (a 36% true discount, not 40%).

How to Calculate Reverse Sales Tax from a Receipt

If your receipt shows a grand total of $108.25 and your municipal sales tax is 8.25%, you cannot simply subtract 8.25% from the total. Doing so would take 8.25% of the tax itself. The mathematically correct formula is:

\[\text{Pre-Tax Subtotal} = \frac{\text{Total Paid}}{1 + \text{Sales Tax Rate}}\]

\[\text{Subtotal} = \frac{\$108.25}{1 + 0.0825} = \frac{\$108.25}{1.0825} = \$100.00\]

Frequently Asked Questions About Sales Tax & Discounts

Are manufacturer coupons taxed before or after the discount?
In most US jurisdictions, manufacturer coupons are considered cash-equivalents reimbursed to the retailer; therefore, sales tax is assessed on the full original purchase price before the coupon is deducted. Store discounts, in contrast, reduce the gross selling price and are taxed after the discount.
Is clothing and grocery food taxed?
Most US states exempt unprocessed grocery foods from sales tax. Several states (such as Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and New Jersey) fully exempt clothing, while New York exempts clothing items under $110.
