Why cycle boundaries matter more than total hours
A night of sleep is not uniform. It moves through light sleep, deep slow-wave sleep and REM in a repeating pattern that averages around ninety minutes per loop. Waking during deep sleep produces sleep inertia — that heavy, disoriented feeling that can last twenty or thirty minutes. Waking at the shallow end of a cycle usually feels clean even when the total sleep was shorter. That is why seven and a half hours often feels better than eight.
Ninety minutes is an average, not a law
Published cycle lengths in adults range from roughly eighty to a hundred and twenty minutes, and an individual's cycles lengthen across the night as REM periods grow. If ninety-minute maths never seems to work for you, try eighty or a hundred and see whether the mornings improve. The field above is adjustable precisely because the popular ninety-minute figure is a population average rather than a personal constant.
The fifteen minutes nobody counts
Sleep onset latency — the time between lying down and actually sleeping — averages ten to twenty minutes in healthy adults. Bedtime calculators that ignore it send you to bed exactly one cycle late. The default here is fifteen minutes; lower it if you fall asleep almost instantly, raise it if you routinely lie awake. Consistently needing more than thirty minutes is worth raising with a doctor rather than solving with arithmetic.
What this tool is not
Cycle timing is a scheduling aid, not a treatment. It cannot compensate for chronic short sleep, and it does not diagnose anything. Persistent daytime sleepiness despite adequate hours, loud snoring with pauses in breathing, or difficulty staying asleep are medical questions, and no calculator should be standing between you and a clinician on those.
